Course Overview
Coming face-to-face with a bear is far from a typical or desired workplace experience—but for those working in remote, forested, or wilderness environments, it’s a real possibility. This Bear Safety Training Course is designed for individuals in industries such as forestry, oil and gas, mining, and environmental fieldwork where working in bear country is part of the job. The course covers proactive measures to reduce the risk of bear encounters and outlines critical response strategies in case a bear is spotted. Through engaging and practical content, you’ll learn how to recognize bear habitats, avoid high-risk areas, and respond effectively during wildlife encounters.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the three species of bears in North America and their key traits
- Understand common food sources that attract bears
- Recognize bear-prone environments and seasonal behavior patterns
- Detect signs of recent bear activity
- Follow safe travel procedures in bear territory
- Set up a secure and low-risk campsite
- Report bear sightings and activity properly
- Respond effectively during bear encounters
- Use bear spray correctly and confidently
- List common bear deterrents
- Create an effective emergency response plan
