Safe Manual Material Handling
Course Overview
Manual material handling injuries are among the most frequent workplace incidents across Canada, often leading to long-term health issues and lost productivity. These injuries—commonly referred to as musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs)—can be significantly reduced with the right training, proper techniques, and the use of ergonomic equipment. The Safe Manual Material Handling Training Course is designed to provide workers with the knowledge and skills they need to identify risks, perform safe lifting and carrying tasks, and implement strategies that help prevent strain and injury. The content is based on best practices outlined by both the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
This course is divided into five practical modules:
- Chapter 1: Introduction to Manual Material Handling
- Chapter 2: Understanding Common Injury Risks
- Chapter 3: Conducting a Pre-Task Risk Assessment
- Chapter 4: Safe Lifting and Handling Techniques

At the end of the course, participants will complete a final exam to validate their understanding of safe manual handling practices and injury prevention.
